Pedal your way from the heart of Bavaria to the stunning canals of Venice on the Munich to Venice Cycle Path, an unforgettable ride that blends leisurely cycling with the thrill of crossing the Alps. This well-established route takes you through Germany, Austria, and Italy, following a mix of dedicated cycle paths, scenic backroads, and quiet country lanes. Your journey begins in Munich, passing shimmering Bavarian lakes and winding through picturesque Tyrolean valleys. You’ll ride beneath the dramatic peaks of the UNESCO-listed Dolomites, following an easy-going rail trail from Dobbiaco to Cortina d’Ampezzo. The most challenging section—crossing the Brenner Pass—can be simplified with a train or bus transfer, making the route more accessible. As you descend towards Italy, the landscape softens, leading you through the charming streets of Treviso before reaching Venice, where the city’s iconic canals and historic Doge’s Palace await. The final two days are a gentle ride towards the Adriatic, making for a perfect finish to this diverse and scenic cycling adventure. Based in 4 star hotels and with the added bonus of an included e-bike rental, this trip will appeal to those seeking a unique experience in comfort.

Leaving Munich behind, you’ll follow the Isar River, quickly swapping city streets for tranquil natural landscapes. Ride through dense forests and unspoiled wetlands, where the peaceful surroundings set the tone for your journey. Along the way, you’ll pass historic abbeys and traditional Bavarian villages, each offering a glimpse into the region’s rich culture. The route continues through the scenic Isar wetlands, eventually leading you to Bad Tölz, a charming town known for its beautifully preserved old town and picturesque riverside setting. +342m/1121.76ft, -209m/685ft

Today’s ride continues along the Isar River, leading you to Lake Sylvenstein. From here, you’ll cycle through the breathtaking landscapes of the Karwendel Nature Park, crossing the German-Austrian border as you make your way to the stunning Achensee, a sparkling mountain lake nestled among the peaks. Take a break and soak in the scenery—or even enjoy a boat trip across the crystal-clear waters before continuing your journey. Overnight will be in Schwaz or nearby Jenbach (or Maruach across the river). +537m/1761ft, -649m/2129ft

Meals:  B

From Jenbach or Schwaz, follow the Inn River cycle path as it leads you into Innsbruck, the vibrant capital of Tyrol. Take time to explore the city’s Old Town, home to the iconic Golden Roof, or venture up to Mount Isel to see the impressive ski jump and the Tirol Panorama. To avoid the most demanding climb, you’ll transfer by train or bus from Innsbruck to the Brenner Pass, the historic border between Austria and Italy. Today, only a few traces of the former checkpoint remain, as the pass now serves as a natural and cultural gateway between the two countries. From Brennero, enjoy a scenic descent along a converted railway track, taking you through Vipiteno/Sterzing, one of Italy’s most charming alpine towns. The ride continues past Fortezza, with its impressive fortress, before reaching Rio di Pusteria, a historic town known for its picturesque streets and lively atmosphere. +301m/987ft, -851m/2876ft

Leaving Mühlbach/Rio di Pusteria, follow a well-maintained cycling path through the picturesque Val Pusteria, passing the Mühlbacher Klause, a historic former border post that once marked the divide between the Roman provinces of Rätien and Norikum. Riding alongside the Rienz River, you’ll arrive in Brunico, a lively alpine town rich in history and culture. Take a break to explore the South Tyrolean Folklore Museum in Teodone, offering insights into traditional life in the region, or visit one of the Messner Mountain Museums—either in Brunico Castle or atop the Kronplatz with breathtaking views. Continuing along the Rienz cycle path, your journey leads you to Villabassa or Dobbiaco, where you’ll settle in for the night. As a bonus, enjoy a free check-up at our Dobbiaco shop, ensuring your bike is in top shape for the next stage of your adventure. +589m/1932ft, -124m/407ft

Meals:  B

Today’s ride follows the old Dolomites railway trail, a scenic route steeped in history. Pedal past Lake Toblacher See and the War Cemetery, a solemn reminder of World War I. Shortly after, take in the breathtaking panorama of the Three Peaks (Drei Zinnen), one of the most iconic sights in the Dolomites, before reaching the emerald-green Lake Dürrensee. A short climb brings you to the border between South Tyrol (Bolzano) and Belluno, marking your descent into the heart of the Dolomites. From here, enjoy a comfortable downhill ride to Cortina d’Ampezzo, often called the "Pearl of the Dolomites," surrounded by stunning alpine peaks. Continuing south, the route remains gently downhill, following the old railway track. To your left, the imposing Sorapis Massif, and to your right, the rugged Cinque Torri (Five Towers) create a spectacular backdrop. The day’s ride ends as you descend through the Boite Valley, arriving in Pieve di Cadore, the birthplace of the Renaissance painter Titian. +455m/1492ft, -725m/2378ft

Meals:  B

Leaving Pieve di Cadore, follow the newly built cycle path as it winds its way to Longarone, a town with a poignant history. In 1963, a devastating landslide at the Vajont Dam triggered a catastrophic flood, destroying the village. Today, Longarone stands as a symbol of resilience, rebuilt with care and surrounded by breathtaking mountain scenery. From here, the route continues south, gradually transitioning from alpine landscapes to the rolling Prosecco hills as you make your way toward Conegliano, a charming town at the heart of Italy’s renowned wine region. +262m/860ft, -1081m/3546ft

Meals:  B

As you leave the Alps behind, the landscape softens into the plains of Veneto, leading you to Treviso, a picturesque city known for its canals, fashion, and vibrant atmosphere. Along the way, admire the grandeur of Palladian villas, masterpieces of the renowned architect Andrea Palladio, built during Venice’s golden age as a dominant European sea power. Following the gentle course of the River Sile, your ride takes you toward the Adriatic Sea, arriving in Venice mainland (Mestre). From here, you’re just a short journey away from the timeless charm of Venice, the "Serenissima," where canals, historic palaces, and a unique atmosphere await your exploration. +0m/0ft, -0m/0ft

Grading

moderate to challenging

GRADE 4 - The recommended route involves a total distance of 510kms, with daily distances of between 60 and 96km/37.5 and 60mi on dedicated cycle ways and paved roads. In general, the terrain ranges from easy to mountainous. The most demanding stages over the Alps (Innsbruck–Brenner) can be shortened by train or bus and the stage from Dobbiaco to Cortina d’Ampezzo is along the cycle path on an old railway trail. The last two days are downhill or flat towards the sea. The tour is suitable for children over 16 years. We recommend pre trip training involving cycling on light to medium traffic roads to ensure you are comfortable cycling through towns.
