Following the path of St. Benedict of Norcia, the founder of Western monasticism, the first stage of this 300km pilgrimage takes you through the most significant places in his life, beginning in his hometown of Norcia. Along the way, you’ll journey through Italy’s green heart, where medieval villages, peaceful monasteries, and dense forests create a landscape straight out of a storybook. Take in the quiet beauty of the Monti Reatini, where golden eagles glide overhead and the scent of truffles fills the air. Every step brings a new discovery, from the spiritual serenity of Rieti to the sweeping vistas of Leonessa and Cascia. Savor authentic Umbrian flavors, from rich cheeses and savory cured meats to the region’s world-renowned truffles. Arrive in Norcia and take some time to explore this charming town, rich in history and tradition. Dating back to the time of the Punic Wars between the Romans and the Phoenicians, Norcia has long held a place of significance. Like nearby Cascia, it is renowned as the birthplace of an important religious figure—St Benedict, the founder of the Benedictine Order and a key figure in Christian monasticism. Living at the turn of the 6th century, St Benedict embraced a life of prayer and work, a philosophy encapsulated in his well-known motto, Ora et Labora—‘Pray and Work.’

The walk begins with a long but gentle ascent, initially crossing the serene Plain of St. Scholastica before traversing the rolling hills that overlook the picturesque Nerina Valley. This stretch offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys, making for a rewarding start to your journey. Around the halfway point, you’ll reach the village of Fogliano, where you can take a well-earned break and savour delicious local dishes. If time allows, consider stopping at Piconi Farm along the way—a great opportunity to learn about traditional local grains and legumes, including the renowned Roveja, a rare and ancient variety of wild pea. Distance: 17km/10.6mi Ascent: +560m/1837ft Descent: -480m/637ft

Today's route is long yet steady, leading you through the dramatic gorges of the Corno stream before arriving in Roccaporena, the birthplace of Santa Rita da Cascia. From here, the trail ascends into the hills, rewarding you with breathtaking views over the rolling landscapes of inland Umbria. Along the way, you’ll pass Colle del Capitano, an area of significant archaeological discoveries, adding a fascinating historical dimension to your journey. Overnight stay in Monteleone di Spoleto, known for its preserved medieval hilltop castle layout and its rich Etruscan heritage, specifically the "Etruscan Biga" (a parade chariot) now in the Metropolitan Museum in New York. Distance 17.5km/11mi, Ascent +690m/2263ft, Descent -336m/1100ft

Meals:  B,D

Today's route is an easy and enjoyable walk across the scenic plains between Monteleone di Spoleto and Leonessa. Following a mix of paths and dirt roads, you’ll journey through a picturesque agricultural landscape, rich in local traditions. If time allows, stop by Il Re del Farro farm to learn about the region’s renowned grains and legumes, including the celebrated Monteleone di Spoleto spelt. Along the way, you’ll pass through the historic villages of Villa Pulcini, Villa Carmine, and Villa Bigioni—each with ancient roots and a unique charm waiting to be discovered. Distance 13km/8mi, Ascent +240m/787ft, Descent -230m/755ft

Enjoy another stunning panoramic walk through woodlands and along quiet secondary roads. While this route is more challenging due to the elevation gain, the rewarding views make it well worth the effort. The first 4.5 km follow a paved road where some traffic is present—this section can be avoided with a private transfer if preferred. From there, the trail winds through the picturesque Monti Reatini, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks, including the impressive Mount Terminillo. Overnight in Poggio Bustone where St Francis visited in around 1208 and had a profound spiritual experience in a cave nearby, now part of the Santuario di San Francesco (Sanctuary of Saint Francis). The sanctuary, nestled in the hills above the town, is a key pilgrimage site. Poggio Bustone also offers panoramic views over the Rieti Valley and is the birthplace of Lucio Battisti, one of Italy’s most famous singer-songwriters. Distance 15km/9.4mi, Ascent +646m/2120ft, Descent -1022m/3352ft

Meals:  Nil

Your final day's walk takes you to the north of Lazio. Along the way you'll find the village of Cantalice, developed vertically on the side of a hill, and the Sanctuary “della Foresta”, where you can immerse yourself in the peaceful atmosphere and admire the beautiful frescoes. In the afternoon, transfer to Rieti. Known as the "Umbilicus Italiae" (navel of Italy), Rieti is a historic town in the Lazio region with ancient Roman roots and a well-preserved medieval center. It is closely linked to Saint Francis of Assisi, serving as a key stop on the St. Francis Way, with important Franciscan sanctuaries nearby. Rieti is also renowned for its Sabine cuisine, featuring spelt, lentils, and high-quality olive oil. Distance 12km/7.5mi, Ascent +395m/1296ft, Descent -594m/1949ft

GRADE 3 - along paths that are mostly well defined and clearly marked. The whole itinerary is mainly on paths and gravel roads (strade bianche), and some sections on asphalted road. You should be able to walk for up to 18km/11.3mi per day although there are some options to shorten walks. The walks may in part be during hot sun on stony tracks. The classic Umbrian landscape of rolling hills (although sometimes steep and long), forests and agricultural fields, are traversed each walking day. A good level of fitness is required and prior experience is advisable. As with all of our trips it is important that you are well prepared.
