Step into history and explore the breathtaking landscapes of central Italy on a walking adventure along the St. Benedict Way. This isn’t just a trip—it’s an experience that feeds your soul, heightens your senses, and connects you to centuries of tradition. Following the path of St. Benedict of Norcia, the founder of Western monasticism, this second stage of the 300km pilgrimage offers an unforgettable experience.

Starting from Rieti, capital of the Sabina region, you'll discover typical Sabine landscapes largely untouched by modern development—cultivated hills, medieval villages, castles and monasteries, and towering limestone peaks where dramatic gorges and wild ravines shape the scenery. Continuing towards Subiaco, traverse the rugged beauty of the Lucretili Mountains, part of the Latium Sub-Apennines. This is a region steeped in authenticity, where the natural beauty remains unspoiled by urban development, and traditional farming and local customs enhance the region's charm. Savour the flavours of Sabina and Lazio: from rich cured meats and olive oil to seasonal truffles and nociata, the delicious walnut and honey nougat of the region.

Whether you’re looking for personal reflection, cultural immersion, or an unforgettable adventure, this self-guided walk is an incredible way to experience Italy at your own pace. Join us on the St. Benedict Way and discover the magic of walking through history.

Arrive in Rieti, capital of the Sabine territory, and take some time to visit the town. Its origins go back a long way, and over the centuries Rieti has preserved its rich history, evident in its well-preserved medieval walls and notable architectural landmarks. Key sites include the 12th-century Romanesque Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the Episcopal Palace dating from 1283, and the Palazzo Comunale, which houses a museum and art gallery.

The trip begins with a long but easy route through the picturesque hills overlooking the Turano River valley. The path traverses rolling hills that offer breathtaking vistas of the valley, surrounded by the serene beauty of the inland valleys of the Rieti region. The ever-present backdrop of the majestic Apennines adds to the scenery, making this section particularly memorable for nature lovers and photographers. Today's destination is Rocca Sinibalda, a medieval village dominated by its imposing castle which towers above the surrounding landscape. The castle is an architectural marvel and serves as a reward for completing this long and enriching walk. Distance 20km/12.5mi Ascent +560m/1837ft, Descent -430m/1410ft *note the castle is open on Saturdays at 4pm and Sundays at 11am. In August only it is open daily except Mondays. Reservations are required.

Today’s route along the St Benedict Way from Rocca Sinibalda to Castel di Tora is a serene and comfortable trek, offering awe-inspiring views of the Turano River valley and the pristine beauty of Turano Lake. This section is perfect for those seeking a blend of nature, tranquility, and a touch of cultural exploration. For a significant portion of the walk you travel alongside the picturesque Turano Lake, a vast and shimmering body of water nestled within the valley. The reflections of the surrounding hills and the peaceful ambiance make this stretch a highlight of the journey. Distance 14km/8.8mi Ascent +405m/1328ft, Descent -553m/1814ft

Meals:  B

Today's stage is a challenging one, but the natural landscape you'll encounter is absolutely breathtaking. You’ll walk along mountain paths offering panoramic views of Lake Turano, lush meadows, and verdant valleys. Along the way, you'll pass through the village of Pozzaglia Sabina, nestled in a magnificent pine forest and near the Cave of San Michele, a sacred site introduced by the Lombards. Another surprise along the journey is the Benedictine Abbey of Santa Maria del Piano, believed to have been built by Charlemagne as a thanksgiving to the Virgin Mary for a victorious battle. Your destination for today is Orvinio, perched in a panoramic position within the Monti Lucretili Park. Distance 13.5km/8.4mi Ascent +1130m/3707ft, Descent -755m/2477ft

Another great panoramic walk today, a captivating journey through the heart of the Sabine Hills combining serene landscapes, historical villages, and a connection to nature. This section of the trail offers a mix of forest paths, hilltop vistas, and quiet rural roads, making it a delightful experience for those seeking beauty and tranquility. Meals:  B

The day starts by taking the bus (not included) to Mandela or Agosta to continue your walk. This stage of the St Benedict Way into Subiaco is one of the most remarkable sections of the pilgrimage route, combining spectacular natural landscapes, historical significance, and spiritual richness. It follows the path of the Aniene River valley, ascending into the Apennine foothills and leading to Subiaco, a key destination in St. Benedict's life. You can choose to walk the whole distance or shorten by approx. 10km (from Agosta - recommended). Subiaco is a Benedictine place of primary importance. It is where Benedict first lived the hermit experience - three years in a cave, the current Sacro Speco, and then founded cenobia: ordered communities of monks. Grading

moderate

GRADE 3 - This is a moderate grade walk along paths that are well defined and clearly marked. The whole itinerary is mainly on paths and gravel roads (strade bianche), and some sections on asphalted road. You should be able to walk for up to 22km per day although there are some options to shorten walks. The walks may in part be during hot sun on stony tracks. The Lazio landscape of rolling hills (although sometimes steep and long), olive groves and vineyards, are traversed each walking day. A good level of fitness is required and prior experience is advisable. As with all of our trips it is important that you are well prepared. We suggest that you undertake regular exercise – swimming, cycling, and jogging, three to four times a week for three months prior to your departure.
