This outstanding cycling opportunity will take you past Austrian castles, Benedictine monasteries and ancestral vineyards en route to the beautiful city of Vienna. The dedicated cycle path takes you across the fertile plains of the Wachau Valley, where vineyards climb the slopes to imposing medieval monasteries perched atop hills between Melk and Krems. Wind past castle ruins and apricot orchards before reaching the capital of Austria, where you can take in a performance of the "Blue Danube" waltz, the melody that evokes Vienna the world over.

Arrive in the capital of Upper Austria, Linz. The city has a lively arts and music culture. In 1783 Mozart wrote his Symphony No. 36 here, now known as the Linz Symphony. The modern art gallery “Lentos” is worth a look - it is situated on the Danube and illuminated at night.

Passing through the beautiful Mostviertel, you will cycle to Grein. Shortly before reaching Grein, the Danube valley narrows as you ride through the fascinating landscape of the Strudengau. In the small Baroque village of Grein you will find the oldest city theatre in Austria as well as a great Maritime Museum and a castle.

Continue cycling through the impressive landscapes of the wild Strudengau and the Nibelungengau to the remarkable Wachau Valley, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage region. The area is known for its rolling hills, vineyards and fortresses. Overnight in Marbach / Pöchlarn or surrounds.

Meals:  B

Today, you pedal through the renowned Wachau, with its truly romantic scenery of vineyards and quaint villages, enroute to Krems. You will pass several fantastic sights - abbeys, castles, ruins, including the castle above Durnstein where Richard the Lionheart was once imprisoned. Alongside the cycle path you will find 'Heurigen', typical Austrian wine taverns, where you can taste local wine and regional foods. On reaching Krems there is time to take a look around before boarding your train to Vienna (included, take your bike with you on the train). The evening is free to discover the sights of Vienna. Be sure to visit the famous Naschmarkt (international foods/goods), a great place to eat or if you have kids or are young at heart, take a ride on the historic ferris wheel on the banks of the Danube.

Meals:  B

The trip concludes in Vienna this morning. Vienna has many great sights to visit including Schönbrunn, Bevedere and Hofburg palaces, the Spanish Riding School and Kunsthistorisches Museum. We can assist with extra nights' accommodation - please ask for our rates.
